ATC Zero in Jersey- Part 2

We mentioned in our post ‘ATC Zero in Jersey’ the loss of Millville Flight Service Station (MIV) due to a roof collapse. There was a hope that the station would be up and running in as little as two weeks. Those hopes have now faded; expect MIV to be closed for good.

The first indication was a scheduled meeting to discuss the future of the building and its tenants, including MIV. The Delaware River Bay Authority scheduled a meeting with an FAA representative, John Harris, on the 7th. Mr. Harris did not show up.

A Delaware pilot group asked the FAA to expedite the re-opening of MIV, only to be told that the FAA considers the facility closed permanently. Lockheed agrees.

One recent crash has lead to some questions over the lack of services.

Comments:
The ATM at MIV , in conjunction with the NAATS FACREP, are trying to re- establish inflight services at MIV and maybe the state of NJ & DE. Unfortunately the FAA has either ingnored their request or dragged their feet. They are hoping with the LM takeover, it won't be their problem. However, the contract calls for LM to provide these services on the day of takeover. Since they haven't taken over yet, they can't do anything to help the proccess. AOPA has been strangely silent on this debacle, I guess their dues paying membership in NJ & DE aren't important to them. This also is another prime example of the FAA not caring about the safety of General Aviation. If it was up to them, they would rather be a lobbyist organization for the airlines. Russ Chew the ATO "CEO" a coincidence, I think not!!!!
